Venetian Las Vegas
The Venetian is at 3355 Las Vegas Blvd South, Las Vegas NV 89109. Phone: 877-857-1861 I remember when Sheldon Adelson demolished the Sands in 1996 and began building the Venetian. Steve Wynn had been busy constructing the Mirage (1989) and Treasure Island (1993), which are fairly standard Las Vegas strip properties. Adelson's Venetian, however, was a vision of the most spectacular, upscale luxury resort that would finally dethrone Caesars Palace as the "best of the best" on the Las Vegas strip. Steve Wynn responded by constructing Bellagio in 1998; which is just as opulent as the Venetian and uses the same European style of architecture; then Wynn built the more modern looking "Wynn" in 2005. For a brief time, however, Venetian was the premiere resort hotel casino on the strip. I was a guest at the Venetian in 2001 and 2002. You can infer from the name that the inspiration for this property is Venice, Italy. Rather than building a resort that resembled Venice, however; Adelson strove to duplicate as much of the city as possible in extreme detail. For example, he was adamant about the water in the Venetian's canals being the exact same color as the water in the canals of Venice. "A picture is worth a thousand words" so some photos of Venetian are at the bottom of this intel. Trying to describe it in words is inadequate; you have to see it. When you book a room at Venetian, you get a suite. Every room in the hotel is a suite. However, the least expensive rooms are not what you might think of as a suite (meaning multiple rooms) although they are quite large and comfortable. The rooms are apparently set up to meet whatever the legal definition is of a hotel suite. The bed(s) are on kind of an elevated platform separated by a decorative metal railing and steps that lead into the living area, which contains a television, chairs, sofa, table, lamps, refrigerator, and other standard hotel room furnishings. There's also a fairly large dressing area / walk in closet between the bed area and bathroom. The refrigerator and a set of drawers next to it are stocked with snacks and beverages which rest on electronic sensors. Picking up an item adds the cost of the item to your bill. I recall a small bag of M&Ms were around $5 back in 2002. Many hotel rooms include this feature; so be careful not to pick up a $50 bottle of champagne that's in the fridge unless you intend to drink it. Like most other Las Vegas strip properties, Venetian has their own free self-parking garage as well as valet service. Their casino is large (120,000 square feet) and attractive. The property includes 19 restaurants, four bars, salon, fitness center, the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum, Madame Tussaud's wax museum, and 80 more shops in the shopping mall-like Grand Canal Shoppes. The location is good for tourists who want to walk around a bit and visit other properties. The new Palazzo is on the Venetian property; Wynn and Encore at Wynn are next door to the north. Across Las Vegas Blvd. you have Treasure Island, Mirage, Caesars Palace, Fashion Show Mall and Caesars Forum Shops in close proximity; and the busiest pedestrian area of the strip is a short distance to the south where you have Imperial Palace, Casino Royale, Flamingo, Harrahs, O'Sheas and Bills all almost on the same block. While Venetian is one of the highest priced Las Vegas strip resorts, it's well worth it if you appreciate an elegant, relaxing and upscale atmosphere while you're on vacation. Choosing a property based solely on price can result in an unpleasant vacation experience.
