Encore Las Vegas
By Urban Photos
For our 18th trip to Las Vegas in June 2009, we decided to pick the newest and most upscale hotel on the Las Vegas strip... Encore at Wynn. Steve Wynn has a remarkable talent for creating highly detailed experiences in luxury. First he updated the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas and made it into the only luxury resort on Fremont Street. After that he built Mirage, Treasure Island, and Bellagio. Those resorts were all sold to MGM Mirage and the money was invested in the $2.7 billion Wynn resort (which was originally going to be called La Reve.) Encore is the "encore" to Wynn; a second room tower designed in the same style and with the same eye for detail in creating the ultimate guest experience. Encore is slightly smaller than Wynn and was built at a cost of $2.3 billion. Compare these expenses to the price of $755 million which is the price Phil Ruffin paid MGM Mirage for the Treasure Island resort in 2008. While such a sum is almost inconceivable to the average person, Steve Wynn has spent nearly seven times that amount in building his towers, which could be labeled "the Wynn Twynns." You could say that Encore and Wynn are worth about the same as seven copies of Treasure Island. We arrived around 6 p.m. so there was only one person ahead of us at the front desk check in line. (Most hotels specify a 3 p.m. check in time, so mid afternoon is the worst time to try and check in to a Las Vegas hotel. You might have to get in line behind 200 people.) While checking in, we mentioned the oddity of how the floor numbers skip from 39 to 50. This is a common practice due to an Asian superstition about the number four. Hotels in Las Vegas that have more than 39 floors will skip directly to 50 to avoid floor numbers that begin with four. The desk clerk agreed that it's a silly superstition but I'm not sure if that was her honest opinion or if she was just agreeing because "the customer is always right." All employees we encountered at Encore and Wynn were highly professional, courteous, and friendly. We paid extra for a "panoramic view" room that faced to the south. (See the 7th and 8th photos below.) The view was spectacular and so was the room; which was similar to the Mandalay Bay 550DR rooms except this one was about 200 square feet bigger and had remote electronic controls for the curtains, lights, and "do not disturb" sign on the door. We ordered Angus burgers with fries from room service one night... they were expensive but hot and delicious (they keep the hamburger patty in a warmer of some kind that's hidden under the table, and put the burger together after wheeling the table into your room) and the next night we tried the Thanksgiving style turkey sandwiches (with stuffing and cranberry sauce) from the Zooza Crackers Deli next door in Wynn. These were also delicious and a bit less pricey than room service. The casino and public areas are amazingly elegant and incorporate two main themes: the color red, and butterflies. A nice convenience for guests of Wynn and Encore is that your room key card doubles as a slot club card which can be used at either casino (and perhaps in the future there will be a third and even fourth tower added to this resort complex.) Many people choose a hotel based on price and state that they don't care about the hotel room because all they're going to do is sleep and shower. I used to feel that way as well, but after staying at about a dozen Las Vegas resorts including budget properties like Circus Circus and Westward Ho and luxury properties like Venetian, Mandalay Bay, and Encore; I can tell you that there is a huge difference in the overall vacation experience. Unless it's a financial hardship for you (in which case you probably shouldn't be going to Las Vegas anyway) definitely book the nicest resort you can afford. You'll thank yourself later. Wynn and Encore transcend the definition of "hotel resort casino" and instead are fantasy-like experiences. The atmosphere is so unreal that it feels as if you're on an elaborate movie set or in a dream. I highly recommend Encore to anyone who wants to have more than just a good time in Las Vegas but a FANTASTIC time you'll never forget.

What a magnificent-looking edifice! (And what a great shot. ) In the ancient days, they built pyramids, temples and colosea, to awe, and to inspire. It seems that in modern times, this role has been taken over by five-star hotels in Vegas.

Great detailed description, and beautiful photos. I'm worried about losing my shirt so I don't plan on going to Vegas, but your photos let me feel as if I took the trip. Thank you!
I enjoyed the tour!! beautiful pictures. The only thing missing was the feeling you get when you ride "Big Shot" on top of the Stratosphere.
Wonderful intel! This brought back memories of our one trip to Las Vegas. Some day I'll write about that trip and all of the funny/scarey things that happened to us.
