Bill's Gamblin' Hall & Saloon Las Vegas
By Urban Photos
Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Saloon (formerly Barbary Coast) is a hidden gem in plain sight on the center of the Las Vegas strip. I've stayed at some of the most expensive Las Vegas strip properties that typically cost $150 or more per night (Encore at Wynn and Venetian) and I've stayed at some of the least expensive "budget properties" (Westward Ho, Circus Circus.) While the price at Bill's is in line with budget properties (I paid $40 per night in February 2010), the room you get is closer to what you'd expect in a $150+ property. And, as an added bonus, you can't get a better location on Las Vegas Blvd. Bill's is dead center at Flamingo Road, next to the famous Flamingo; across Las Vegas Blvd. from Caesars Palace and across Flamingo Road from Bally's and Paris. Each room has a huge flat panel TV and wireless Internet access in addition to the standard hotel room furnishings. I was able to use the Internet my first night there for free, but then it started demanding $10 per day from me after that. Paying for wireless Internet is the norm at Las Vegas strip hotels. I'm not sure if I just got lucky my first night there or if I was connected to someone else's wireless signal. Being in the direct center of the strip, you will find several different signals available. The rooms at Bill's are larger than most "deluxe" strip hotel rooms (which in most hotels is the least expensive room type), clean, and show no wear although the property is old. I stayed at Mandalay Bay in December 2008 in what they call a "550DR", which means 550 square foot deluxe room; and the Bill's room felt a bit larger although Bill's web site states that all of their rooms are 400 square feet. The rooms at Bill's are definitely worth over $100 per night but will cost about half as much most of the time. (Large conventions like CES in January drive up prices at all hotels; and weekends and holidays are always more expensive than Sunday thru Thursday night.) I was just as satisfied with my room at Bill's as I had been with the rooms I've had at Encore, Venetian, and Mandalay Bay; which are the most upscale places I've stayed. Of course there is a downside, however. The main drawback is that it will take you just as long to get up to the third floor in Bill's small, creaky old elevator as it would take you to get up to the 30th floor at Wynn. And there are only two small, creaky old elevators. The casino is more like downtown casinos (small, noisy and smoky) than like the mega resort casinos. Having only three floors, you may encounter more noise than you're used to. Fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances frequently run along Las Vegas Blvd. and Flamingo Road with sirens blaring. You're more likely to hear this commotion from three floors up than from 30 floors up. Bill's is unique in that it definitely feels like a "low roller" budget property in every aspect except when you're in your room, in which case you almost feel as if you're in a high roller luxury suite. Being on the center of the strip is important to many Las Vegas visitors, and Bill's is without a doubt the best value for your money on the center strip.

Very interesting .. if I ever go back to Las Vegas .. I'll have to book a room. The fact that it is central makes a big difference.
Great intel. Thanks for sharing this valuable information. I go the end of September. I don't think I could stand the heat in the summer months there. Houston is a furnace in July and August..It gets pretty hot here too......
Thank you for sharing this information, urbanphotos. A great review and execellant images!! Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
